The Jennings - Edinburgh
THE BRIEF
The Jennings contacted Kitchens International with a view to increase storage and modernise their dated kitchen that suited their lifestyle. The previous kitchen had been installed when they moved into the 3 bedroomed apartment in New Town, Edinburgh 15 years prior. As keen cooks and bakers, the Jennings wanted to create a space they could both be in at the same time, as well as the option to relax and sit in the kitchen together. They also wanted to incorporate the utility space into the kitchen as the existing one opened straight onto the kitchen.
KI Designer, Samantha Dack, wanted to tie the kitchen in with the rest of the home renovation to give it a more modern feel. The clients were keen to go with a darker palette that incorporated metallic and industrial textures, whilst retaining the existing floor, so this needed to be considered within the design.
THE DESIGN CONCEPT
The brief called for a contemporary aesthetic, yet one that would sensitively sit within the broader home context. To achieve that, we selected a neutral palette of premium finishes, emphasising texture and subtle contrast rather than bold colour. Clean, handleless Leicht cabinetry in a soft matte surface provides a calm backdrop, while the worktops and splashbacks introduce nuanced variation in tone and surface character.
Carefully considered lighting plays a central role: ambient down-lighting softly illuminates the workspace, while integrated LEDs in to the island bulkhead adds depth and drama without overpowering the composition. The kitchen layout itself is generous and sociable - a large central island forms the heart of the room, anchoring the space and for both preparing food and casual entertaining and dining.
