Mr & Mrs Dalton - St Andrews
THE BRIEF
Longing for a contemporary open plan kitchen, the Daltons thought this could never happen when they found and fell in love with a 13th century five storey townhouse in St Andrews. They almost passed the house by because the refurbishment seemed impossible but a close friend and architect convinced them otherwise and so in blind faith they jumped on board and committed to the property. The architectural design intended to knock together two of the three vaulted cellars, to create a long open plan kitchen/diner.
As owners of a local restaurant the Daltons know a thing or two about kitchens and were clear from the start about the style they wanted. They were looking for contemporary cabinetry that would set-of the medieval stone ceiling but it had to be functional as they entertained often.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT
Our design brief was to deliver a kitchen that offers contemporary usability and comfort, while sensitively responding to the existing structure.
To achieve this, we selected a soft, light-toned palette that enhances natural light and helps the space feel more open and welcoming. The Callerton cabinetry is sleek and handle-less, emphasising the minimalist aesthetic, yet thoughtful detailing ensures that performance and storage are not compromised. The layout centres around a sculptural island, which creates a fluid flow and serves as a focal element for both food preparation and informal seating.
Painted Callerton cantilevered oak units were chosen with a matching Corian worktop to create a very bright kitchen while colour was injected with accented painted rusty red walls.

"The mix of new and old gives it a really special atmosphere,“ says Ken. “Contrary to our initial concern we love spending time here with family and friends. It’s exactly what we wanted."
