Mr & Mrs Barrie - Glasgow
THE BRIEF
Situated in the west end of Glasgow, the owners of this traditional red sandstone house were tired of the small, dated kitchen and began their journey to create their dream open plan living space whilst also maintaining all the original character and features of the property.
The brief was to design a space that the whole family could use, a space for the younger children on the island was essential, which could also be used by the adults when entertaining. It was also key to ensure that an ample working area could be achieved without making the space too cramped but also had to include all the relevant appliances and kit such as recycle bins, accessible power points and those all-important storage solutions. But it needed to be a kitchen with “clean lines”.
It was also key to maintain as many original features as possible, the fireplaces and old presses were all being kept and were all key to the overall design.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT
The design made use of some of the original features in the room; the fireplace sits directly behind the Island and the two are framed by the opening through to the dining space, which also has another feature fireplace. The picture rail and door facings on the entrance to the room were all important aspects of the design process, the whole flow of the two separate but linked spaces had to be right.
Handleless Matt light Grey, super smooth to the touch cabinetry fronts with dark timber accents by Callerton blended in well with the dark paint which was utilised on existing Timbers within the room.
To avoid joints, Corian was the surface of choice for worktops. The client provided a specially selected timber for the breakfast bar which was shaped, oiled and polished on site to ensure the finish was in keeping with the rest of the timbers in kitchen.

"We're thrilled with the result - it looks fantastic and works perfectly for everyday life."
