Mr & Mrs Hughes - Edinburgh
THE BRIEF
When faced with a Victorian semi-detached house in Edinburgh that needed massive updating, it would be simple to use the existing space for the kitchen and just install new furniture. But our designers don't think like that. They wanted the dining room, which was on one level, to flow naturally into the kitchen space below and give the room a wow factor as you walked in. And that’s exactly what they did.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT
The previous kitchen was tired, cluttered and awkwardly laid out and didn’t really work, as the dining area was up a few steps and detached from the kitchen. By cleverly using understated materials such as smoke mirrors, skilled lighting details and harmonious features we managed to create a room that has instant impact. The client wanted a real change and was great to work with as we were on the same wavelength when it came to design
Although in essence the kitchen area is a long galley style, it has the feel and look of a much larger room. The kitchen area opens onto a conservatory but also contains a traditional metal spiral staircase at one end. The subtle finish from Leicht's CERES Platinum door creates a contemporary feel and is beautifully contrasted with dark concrete IKONO Neroton cabinetry that surround the prep area and cooking appliances. To give a more streamlined look to the kitchen, pocket doors were integrated in to the design to keep laundry appliances out of sight.
Desert Silver Silestone worktops provide an almost reflective surface and run from the kitchen through to the dining area, creating a perfect transition from one area to the next. Bevelled smoke mirror doors were utilsed in the centre of the tall housings in the dining area and create an elegant illusion of space.
The addition of a window seat in the dining area creates a more informal atmosphere and has become a favourite place for the clients to relax. By retaining the original wooden shutters allows a nod to the house’s origins. Another lovely design addition is a built-in wine rack in one corner which is a bit quirky but perfect for having bottles of wine to hand.

"We are so impressed with the level of service from KI, we love the space and the whole experience completely exceeded our expectations!"
